It was excruciating. It was excruciatingly beautiful, written by David Ebershoff, is about an ordinary boy named Billy who falls in love with a girl named Katie. Katie has two other suitors but she loves Billy above all the others.

Unfortunately, their love becomes increasingly complicated when her father convinces her to marry someone else. When she refuses, he locks her up in his house and demands that she marry the man he has chosen for her. Finally, she agrees to marry him after learning that Billy is indeed alive and well.
